OUR MISSION
The mission of Odyssey Charter School is to work in partnership with the family and community, with the aim of helping each child reach full potential in all areas of life. We seek to educate the whole child with the understanding that each person must achieve a balance of intellectual, emotional, physical, spiritual and social skills as a foundation for life.
Odyssey Charter School Jr./Sr. High recognizes that all children are individuals with distinct needs and interests. The school acknowledges that children learn at different rates and in different ways. A core tenant of Odyssey Charter School is the belief that children are natural learners and, when supplied with a rich and dynamic learning environment, will become enthusiastic, self-motivated learners. The school is committed to providing students with an enriched learning environment that develops in each child a strong academic foundation through rigorous, mastery-based instruction.
The philosophy of OCS Jr./Sr. is based upon the premise that each student finds identity, meaning, and purpose in life through connections with the community and the natural world, as well as through such spiritual values as compassion, empathy, and peace. Holistic education aims to call forth from young people an intrinsic reverence for life and a genuine love of learning. There is a genuine sense of community among teachers, students, and parents involved with the school. Holistic schools are staffed with educators who possess a philosophical commitment to their own personal development, as well as a deep sensitivity to the learning styles and needs of their students. The whole school/whole child approach in a K-12 educational model is grounded in the Montessori philosophy that permeates through Odyssey Charter’s holistic approach to raising “radiant” children and young adults.
"GREEN" AND HEALTHY SCHOOL
Odyssey Charter Jr./Sr. High emphasizes a school-wide mission focused on helping each child reach their full potential. The goal is to promote, protect, and improve the health and well-being of the members of our community. We encourage our students, families, and staff to maintain life-long healthy eating habits and physical activity.
Additionally, the school building and grounds have been designed to enhance the health of our students. The school uses “green seal-certified” cleaners in all of its buildings, HEPA filters in the air duct system, and low ambient lighting. The Constance Ortiz Wellness and Performing Arts Center, the school’s new two-story, 23,800 square foot gymnasium and performing arts center, will enhance our sports, music, and arts programs. The campus also includes sports fields, a running track, the Odyssey Farm, and native habitats.
The overall mission for health and wellness is to help each child reach full potential through a carefully designed educational environment which includes nutrition education, a physical education and healthy lifestyles program, organic gardening experiences, a healthy café, nature trails, and a school facility designed to enhance health.
